Having established itself as a local leader in beautifully innovative, intuitive bridal design since it was first launched by its founder Vinka Lucas in 1959, it’s no surprise that Vinka’s daughter and current creative director, Anita Turner, would continue with these traditions, with the launch of a new range focusing on celebrating brides with curves.
“Our latest collection is all about embracing the female form in all its shapes and sizes,” says Anita. “We’ve worked with all kinds of figures over the years and want to bring out that experience with this particular range. Having the freedom to work on a collection like this one without any limitations is one of the highlights of doing all our work in-house.”
Anita says they hope to “emphasise and embrace the diversity and beauty we see in each and every one of our brides, no matter their shape or size. We aim to showcase an array of new designs and silhouettes that will enhance and flatter curvier figures to help inspire future brides.”
“We often see a lack of size diversity in our industry especially in regards to bridal design, so we hope to use our experience as designers and our knowledge of how to best embrace the female figure to help every bride feel accommodated and as special as she deserves for her wedding day,” she explains.
Anita says one of the biggest challenges they often see facing curvier brides is ensuring the cut and fit of the dress is perfect for them, especially around the bustline.
“This problem is exacerbated by the way many New Zealand bridal boutiques operate, encouraging brides to order in a gown in their selected style six to nine months before the wedding and then trying to fit it after arrives, which creates a lot of room for stress trying to estimate the right size before ordering and then relying on major alterations to make the gown fit correctly, often to varied success.”
“We’re proud to be able to create bespoke gowns to our brides’ exact measurements and tastes, so that we can ensure that the fit and diner details are perfect for every bride,” says Anita. “Every figure is unique, and it’s by keeping this at the centre of our design process for our brides that we feel we’re able to do our best work.”
The new Vinka collection features beautiful hand-beaded laces and is predominantly in an ivory palette, though there are several gowns featuring nude bases with hints of blush.
