Basic Things You Need To Know About Getting a Custom-Made Gown and the Process Involved

Decided on a custom-made wedding gown – what do you need to know?

Having your wedding gown custom-made is a very special experience – it’s our specialty at Vinka Design – and it’s never too late to start. However, I know from experience that it can be seen as a daunting prospect, so I’ve decided to share the answers to the questions we hear most often from the bride to be.

How much does it cost?

The price of a custom made wedding dress can vary depending on what is used to create it; the fabrics, the lace, the trimmings, how much is used and the time involved. We will always try to work within your budget and once the decision is made, everything is included – fittings, alterations and all that is required to achieve your dream of a gorgeous wedding gown.

How does it work?

It usually takes a consultation or two in our Auckland bridal store. We work with you on the design, fabric and lace selection and then provide a sketch and sample. A few months before the wedding we take your measurements and the exciting process begins.

How long will it take?

This really depends on you, the bride. Some of you are super organised and have planned and budgeted to having a lengthy engagement. Others, it’s all go and you’re planning the wedding in less than three months! We’re happy to work with all of you. We can work with you to plan, work out the design, firm up the price and have it all on stand-by for when you wants us to start.

How do you go about creating a custom gown?

At your first fitting the gown has been cut and the lining is fitted and adjusted so we can replicate that with the base layer of the gown, which is usually made in satin. This lining has to be made to fit perfectly and this is checked at the second fitting.

Once the base layer is perfect the lace and/or outer layers of fabrics are styled and pinned in place. Then the many hours of hand sewing begins.

The third fitting is what we would call ‘the final’. Hem lines are checked, so it’s important to have chosen your shoes for this stage, and any final touches are applied. The bride practices walking and moving around in her designer gown to make sure she is 100 per cent happy!

For us at Vinka it’s all about you having a wonderful experience and a gown that fits perfectly for your special day – we’ve been doing it for over 50 years.
